Color Design – Georgia O’Keefe

Updated: Mar 20, 2019

“Whether the flower or the color is the focus I do not know. I do know the flower is painted large to convey my experience with the flower – and what is my experience if it is not the color?” Georgia O’Keeffe

Color captivates, expressing joy, peace, love, lust, anger, zest, danger, life, death, and endless emotions. When combining colors, another set of emotions can attract our attention. Research studies show that colors can actually have an influence on a person’s state of mind and cognitive ability. Further studies indicate  approximately 85% of a consumer’s purchasing choice is based on its color.

Selecting colors for home decor becomes a puzzle of sorts. German-born American Abstract Expressionist Painter, Hans Hofmann, 1880-1966, noted: “Colors must fit together as pieces in a puzzle or cogs in a wheel.”

Color choice comes down to practicality, personal taste, emotion, and external stimuli. Currently, edgy color ideas are surfacing. For example, black is on the rise because people associate it with luxury – and in the “new economy,” the color takes note in decor. Combined tones of purples and boysenberry are among colors of interest as a hue for creativity and irreverence.
